Chief Curator Nancy Spector describes the collaborative approach to the planning and execution of the exhibition theanyspacewhatever as footage shows the participating artists installing their new, generally site-specific works designed to disrupt and transform the museum environment. The ten artists—Angela Bulloch, Maurizio Cattelan, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Douglas Gordon, Carsten Höller, Pierre Huyghe, Jorge Pardo, Philippe Parreno, and Rirkrit Tiravanija—are part of a generation that emerged in the early 1990s in a shift away from self-critical analysis of representation toward a theatrical sensibility and exploration of new narratives. Bulloch, Gonzalez-Foerster, and Huyghe describe their individual interventions—Firmamental Night Sky: Oculus.12 (2008), Promenade (2007), and OPENING (2008), respectively—each one a reaction to the Guggenheim’s architecture, making the exhibition model a creative medium in and of itself.
