Navin Rawanchaikul: A Family Reunion with Grandma
7:32 | Published on December 11, 2013 | 278 Views
Artist Navin Rawanchaikul, whose epic painting Places of Rebirth is featured in No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia, takes part in a family reunion. His 88 year-old grandmother in Chiang Mai cooks a special dessert, which for Navin recalls the memory of his late mother. The grandmother recounts the family’s post-partition journey from their homeland of Punjab (now Pakistan) to their “place of rebirth” in Thailand. Poring over old photos, she discusses the family’s roots and their arrival in Bangkok, and describes her idea of “home.”
