The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Architecture Tour
May 2010
Chapter 7, "Early Reactions to the Building"
Since it opened to the public in 1959, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum building has provoked curiosity, admiration, exaltation, and even scorn. Every year, over one million visitors come not only to view world-class art, but to experience first-hand the landmark building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. On the occasion of the museum’s 50th Anniversary, we have developed the Guggenheim Architecture Tour. In this video available for download, you'll see unique and historic images, and hear artists, architects, curators, and historians describe why Wright’s building elicits such powerful reactions and what makes it—in the eyes of many—an architectural masterpiece.

from Kiki Smith, Norman Foster, and members of the museum-going public.

Gallery Guides
January 2008Download "Gallery Guides" (8.4 MB, audio only, 9 min., 12 sec.)
This podcast takes listeners behind the scenes of the museum's Gallery Guide program, an innovative position that combines museum educators with security personnel. Gallery Guides facilitate discussions about art while protecting the work on display. Hear from Maria Celi, director of visitor services; Georgia Krantz, education program manager; Steve Ursell, director of security; and several gallery guides as to why the program creates a more dynamic, interactive museum experience.

The Gallery Guide program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
