Asian Art Program

The Guggenheim’s Asian Art Program aims to advance the study, research, and presentation of Asian art worldwide. Working with leading museums, academic institutions, cultural organizations, and galleries across America, Europe, and Asia, the Guggenheim promotes the highest level of critical discourse, scholarship, and curatorial activity, and serves to expand the parameters of what defines Asian art today. As part of its Asian Art Program, the museum curates special exhibitions, such as Lee Ufan (2011) and The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860—1989 (2009) and Cai Guo-Qiang: I Want to Believe (2008); offers an Asian Art Fellowship; and works with its Asian Art Council to shape the museum’s curatorial policy and vision to increasingly include modern and contemporary Asian art.

Capital Projects

After a major multi-million dollar restoration project to refurbish the Museum’s exterior and upgrade key building infrastructure systems, help is needed with specific capital costs to ensure the integrity of the restoration.

The Conservation Department at the Guggenheim requires regular upgrades to its equipment and space in order to more effectively maintain works of art in the collection and on loan to the museum, treat any emergencies that may arise with works in the museum’s care, and enrich conservation-related education programming.

Gallery lighting at the Guggenheim requires repairs and upgrades in order to improve the quality of the public presentation of art throughout the museum, increase the flexibility and ease of lighting design, and expand the museum’s ability to safely exhibit works on paper in the galleries. Currently, support is needed for a comprehensive computer-controlled lighting system to guarantee daily consistency in gallery lighting of exhibitions, guarantee control of the hours that artwork is exposed to light, and ensure that all visitors to the museum have the best possible viewing experience as facilitated by innovative and reliable lighting design.

The Peter B. Lewis Theater and News Corporation New Media Theater require regular upgrades to audio/visual projection, recording, and presentation systems to be current and allow for the public presentation of a wide range of electronic media, film, and live performances.
