Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sea of Buddha, 001, 002, and003, 1994

The appointment in 2006 of Alexandra Munroe as Senior Curator of Asian Art cemented the Guggenheim's commitment to fostering a sophisticated critical methodology for integrating modern and contemporary non-Western art within the context of an increasingly global art history. Now assisted by a team of experts—including Assistant Curator of Asian Art Sandhini Poddar and curatorial fellows funded by the W.L.S. Spencer Foundation—Munroe has overseen a range of award-winning exhibitions and added depth and texture to the Guggenheim's collection. Supporters of the Asian Art Program are able to participate in all the Guggenheim's programs and in a number of Asian art–focused activities, including studio visits and roundtable discussions with leading scholars in the field.
