Pipilotti Rist. Himalaya's Sister's Living Room, 2000.

The story of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation permanent collection is essentially the story of several very different private collections that have been brought together and augmented through numerous acquisitions. The collection is a work in progress, evolving through decades of private philanthropy. Learn more about the Guggenheim Collections or our Collection Online.

The foundation is continuously interested in acquiring groups of works amassed by private collectors willing to share their legacy with the public. The foundation also regularly purchases individual works of art. In order to insure that adequate resources are available for this purpose, the foundation has formed several Acquisition Committees comprising individuals with a keen appreciation of contemporary art and a strong desire to support the museum's collecting mission.

The overall strategic direction of these Acquisition Committees is discussed and reviewed with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Advisory Board. This invitation-only group is chaired by foundation Trustee David Ganek.
