Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Elects Linda Macklowe to Board of Trustees


NEW YORK, NY – February 1, 2007 – Linda Macklowe has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, it was announced today by William Mack, the Foundation’s Chairman. Mrs. Macklowe’s election took place at the January 24, 2007, meeting of the Board. “The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is delighted to welcome Linda Macklowe to its Board of Trustees,” said Mr. Mack. “Her unswerving dedication to—and energetic interest in—cultural causes in New York City, and her long-term involvement with the Guggenheim are exemplary, and we look forward to working with her on the Board.”

Mrs. Macklowe was founder and curator of Hammarskjold Plaza Sculpture Garden in midtown Manhattan and of the Wave Hill Sculpture Garden in Riverdale, New York. She served on the New York City Mayor’s Advisory Committee for the Visual Arts under Mayor John Lindsay and as panelist for the Government's Percent for Art Program. She has also been an advisor for public art projects in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Aspen.


She currently serves on the Board of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., and the Executive Committee of the American Friends of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. She has had a strong relationship with the Guggenheim Museum for many years. She was a Thannhauser Patron from 1993 through 1999 and is a member of the International Director’s Council. She is on the painting and sculpture Acquisition Committee of the Whitney Museum.


Mrs. Macklowe’s husband, Harry Macklowe, is chairman of Macklowe Properties, a real estate investment and development company he founded in New York City in 1961. Mr. and Mrs. Macklowe have been actively collecting postwar and contemporary art throughout their married life. Their children, Billy Macklowe and Liz Swig, are members of Guggenheim collecting councils.
