Guggenheim Director Responds to Ai Weiwei Release

In April, the Guggenheim launched an online petition to express concern for Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s freedom and to call for his release after his arrest at a Beijing airport on April 3. Following news reports of Ai’s release on June 22, Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, issued the following statement: "We are greatly relieved to learn that Ai Weiwei has been released. The Guggenheim’s support for Ai Weiwei during his detention has been part of a broader initiative that involved museums and individual artists around the world. While the Guggenheim has no comment on the circumstances surrounding Ai Weiwei’s release, we will of course continue to follow this situation and hope for a complete and satisfactory resolution for artistic expression."
