The Sunday Times (UK) has recognized Maurizio Cattelan: All in its list of Top 500 Apps. Produced on the occasion of the Guggenheim's Maurizio Cattelan retrospective exhibition, which was on view November 4, 2011–January 22, 2012, the app is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android. It includes dramatic views of the Guggenheim installation, texts about the works, and video commentary by many of the artist’s key collaborators.
The annual list is compiled by a team of experienced app reviewers
and
experts, and features a roundup of apps from around the world in
categories such as travel, music, the arts, entertainment, books, TV and
radio,
science, DIY, gardening, and games. In
its review of the Cattelan app, the Times
notes, “Even if you’re not a die-hard Cattelan fan, this app heralds a
promising trend for augmenting art exhibitions with custom-made content.” Visit thesundaytimes.co.uk for the full list and reviews.
Filmmaker
John Waters introduces the app and its sections, which feature exhibition
curator Nancy
Spector, who examines Cattelan’s oeuvre; exhibition engineers and artwork
conservators as they tell the story of how the extraordinary installation was
created; and more than 20 video interviews with Cattelan’s friends and
associates, some shot by the subjects themselves.
A key feature of the app is an interactive interface using detailed shots of
the exhibition model that allows users to zoom in on the installation from four
different perspectives, scrolling through and examining works in closer detail.
Exclusive footage of Cattelan’s works being installed in the museum’s rotunda
is also included, as well as conversations with the Guggenheim conservators and
technicians who created the armatures for the artworks and oversaw the
installation process.
