A 30-second television spot for Richard Prince: Spiritual America, the exhibition on view at the Guggenheim from Sept. 28, 2007–Jan. 9, 2008, has been nominated for a New York Emmy Award in the Community/Public Service (PSAs) category. Nominees in this category were selected, according to the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NY NATAS), for "excellence in announcements that effectively focus interest in and marshal support for worthy community or area causes." The PSA, produced in partnership with Thirteen/WNET, aired on Thriteen/WNET and WLIW over a six-week period during the run of the Prince show, as well as on the NY10 network in New York taxicabs.
The spot was a collaborative effort between members of the Guggenheim's curatorial team, including Nancy Spector and Katherine Brinson, Richard Prince, the Guggenheim's Marketing Director Laura Miller, WNET's creative team, and the design firm DMD. Peter Sutherland, a filmmaker documenting Prince's work, also provided video footage used in the spot. Asking the question, "Is Art More Real than Life?", it shows Prince working in his studio and going about his daily routine. If you look closely, you can see the artist working on a piece from his de Kooning Paintings series, the most recent body of work shown in the exhibition.
Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 29, 2009. A full list of nominees can be found on NY NATAS's Web site.
