In September 2008, the Board of Trustees welcomed a new member—passionate collector, patron, and champion of the arts Carl Gustaf Ehrnrooth of Helsinki, Finland.
Gustaf is currently converting a stable on his family's estate into a private museum to house his collection of over 500 works by contemporary Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic and, most recently, European and American artists as well. He has also begun to generously share his collection: this fall, Pro Artibus, a museum in Tammisaari, Finland, exhibited a large selection of his Finnish holdings.
Gustaf is a private investor with Corbis Investments S.A., a firm whose core holdings include global consulting and engineering firm Poyry Plc, and leading Finnish textile and clothing design company Marimekko Plc. He is also a founding member and Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees, of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art Foundation. Gustaf and his wife, Maire, are closely associated with the Mairea and Maire Gullichsen Foundations, both of which oversee important international art collections, and for which his wife serves on the Boards of Directors.
Regarding the appointment, Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Board Chairman William Mack said: “Our Board is becoming increasingly international—a fitting reflection of the Foundation’s oversight of a global network of museums. Carl Gustaf, with his very international outlook, will be a wonderful addition to our Board.”
