(NEW YORK, NY—May 8, 2006) A Year with Children 2006: Selected Works from Learning Through Art, an exhibition organized by the Sackler Center for Arts Education at the Guggenheim Museum, will be on view at the Guggenheim from May 26 through June 18, 2006. The exhibition presents selections of artwork by approximately 1500 second- through sixth-grade students who participated in artist-led residencies in 11 public schools throughout New York City. Approximately 275 works will be on display, including paintings, drawings, prints, mixed-media sculpture, painted and embroidered fabric panels, digital photographs, decorated costumes, clay, and more.

A Year with Children is an annual exhibition that showcases work by students participating in Learning Through Art (LTA), an education program of the Guggenheim Museum. LTA sends practicing artists into New York City classrooms for yearlong residencies, to create process-oriented art projects that examine ideas and themes related to the school curriculum. The late Natalie K. Lieberman, a Guggenheim Museum trustee, founded LTA in 1970 in response to the elimination of art and music programs in New York City public schools.

This award-winning program is designed to introduce art techniques, promote critical thinking and creativity, and encourage students to view, analyze, and discuss works of art. During the 2005–06 school year, LTA residencies explored a diverse range of topics, including ancient Egypt, Russia, the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City subway, the rainforest and environmental issues, architecture, and immigration. These explorations utilized art on view at the Guggenheim in the exhibitions RUSSIA! and David Smith: A Centennial, and works from the permanent collection, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright’s unique architecture.

Organized by borough, the exhibition forms a creative journey throughout New York City, including examples of various stages of student work reflecting the instruction, thought, and invention that preceded the final pieces. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to view, among other projects, self-portraits recreating historical moments; photonovelas about immigration; and mixed-media sculptures incorporating personal symbols, inspired by the work of David Smith.

Rebecca Shulman Herz, Manager of Learning Through Art, organized A Year with Children 2006 with assistance from the LTA staff. According to Herz, “The impact of this program is enormous. We are teaching skills in visual expression while building lifelong engagement in the arts and comfort in museums. Students and teachers love this program because they learn that art isn’t something to be intimidated by.” A third-grade teacher from P.S. 86 concurs. “This program has helped my students be able to talk about art without focusing on a wrong or right answer. It has also helped them express themselves better by being more descriptive. Even the shiest kid tends to raise his or her hand during LTA periods." Students also recognize the benefits of the program. As a third-grade student at P.S. 86 says, "Guggenheim helps kids to learn about how you can make things, and the things we make express what we feel. It helps us learn by creating, not telling."

Teaching Literacy Through Art Teacher Workshop on Tuesday, June 6, 3:30–6 PM ($20 per educator)

Teaching Social Studies Through Art Teacher Workshop on Wednesday, June 14, 3:30–6 PM ($20 per educator)
