The history of providing shade to traveling merchants makes the banyan tree the basis of design for the Banyan Pavilion. Sited in the Queen’s Park Savannah, Trinidad and Tobago, the pavilion serves as a juxtaposition of the banyan tree north of the location, in the Botanic Gardens. Concrete walls, me tal rods and shade cloth become the aerial roots, trunks, branches and the canopy to provide shelter and re-present nature’s architecture.
