The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's 1961 exhibition Paintings from the Arensberg and Gallatin Collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, presented masterpieces from two of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's influential and pioneering collections of modern art. Henry Clifford, the Curator of Paintings for the Philadelphia Museum of Art wrote the introduction to the catalogue, which traces the development of the two collections and how they came to be donated to the museum. The Arensberg Collection, particularly strong in Cubist works, includes Duchamp's famous Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912). The Arensberg Collection was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1950, while the Gallatin Collection was donated in 1943. The Guggenheim Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art regularly lent selections of their collections to each other. The catalogue includes a list of artists and their works included in the exhibition from each collection and a selection of black-and-white reproductions.

Excerpt

Albert Eugene [Gallatin], or Eugene as he was called by his friends, was also a painter in his own right. He was thus possessed of an "eye" which, added to his exquisite taste and complete abhorrence of the second-rate, admirably fitted him to be the gentleman collector par excellence. While never forced to starve in a garret, he was not in any sense a Maecenas. It is true that he and some of his New York friends were dubbed "The Park Avenue Cubists" but this was said with respect and admiration.
