Six Modern Masters from the Guggenheim Museum, New York

Six Modern Masters from the Guggenheim Museum, New York

Thomas M. Messer
Published in 1985
68 pages, fully illustrated
Softcover, 7.75 x 10 inches

Celebrating the work of Alexander Calder, Robert Delaunay, Naum Gabo, Vasily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, and Pablo Picasso in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's collection, this exhibition appeared at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice in 1985. Thomas M. Messer, former director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, served as curator for this exhibition, exploring the concept of the modern master. The catalogue includes an introductory text written by Messer, brief biographies for each artist, and thirty-nine images in color and black and white. Messer presents these six artists, belonging to a classical past, as figures that have successfully made their indelible mark on the history of art.

The exhibition presented here is based upon a collection and in this sense bears some resemblance to the permanent displays that have in the past and will in the future fill the spaces of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni during the Venetian summer. Like Peggy Guggenheim's priceless bequest, the thirty-nine selected paintings here assembled are also drawn from a classical period in twentieth century art and may therefore be viewed and admired from a distance as are all treasures of a past age.
