Learning Through Art

Are you a Learning Through Art alumnus? We'd love to hear from you! Share your experiences with the LTA program.

The Learning Through Art program (LTA) places practicing artists in New York City public school classrooms, where they collaborate with teachers to create process-oriented art projects that examine ideas and themes related to the school curriculum. In these 10- to 20-week residencies, teaching artists introduce art techniques and concepts and encourage students to view, analyze, and discuss works of art.

The program’s Web site offers an in-depth look at LTA residencies and provides a number of useful resources for teachers, including a gallery of student work, lesson plans, and training in inquiry, our method for viewing works of art with students.

LTA has recently been awarded research grants from the United States Department of Education to study the links between art-based instruction and the development of literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students. Visit our research findings page to read more about these exciting projects.
