Carmen Giménez

Curator

Carmen Giménez was Stephen and Nan Swid Curator of Twentieth-Century Art at the Guggenheim Museum from 1989–2014. Her exhibitions of modern sculpture include Picasso and the Age of Iron; A Century of Sculpture: The Nasher Collection; Richard Serra: Sculpture; Calder: Gravity and Grace; Constantin Brancusi: The Essence of Things; Richard Serra: The Matter of Time; and David Smith: A Centennial.

Giménez has also curated a number of exhibitions of modern and historical art, including The Global Guggenheim: Selections from the Extended Collection and Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth, and History, both at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, as well as Cy Twombly at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

During her years as Director of the National Center for Exhibitions for the Spanish Ministry of Culture (1984–89), she organized dozens of exhibitions and was also responsible for the transformation of an 18th-century former hospital in Madrid into the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, which was instrumental in bringing modern and contemporary art into post-Franco Spain. In the early 1990s, she played an essential role in the development of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and beginning in 1997 she supervised the conversion of the Palacio de Buenavista in Malága into the Museo Picasso Málaga, which opened under her directorship in 2004.
