The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum offers a variety of internships students of junior-year college level or above, graduate students, postgraduates, and mature professionals pursuing further experience in the arts within a host of different departments.

There are four internship programs that we offer throughout the year. We offer our internships through the fall, spring, and summer semesters, as well as our academic year program. We encourage applicants to apply for placements for either three months (one semester) or six months (two semesters). Please mark this choice on your application form.

Internship Periods

Spring: semester runs January–April (application deadline: November 1)
Summer: semester runs May/June–August (application deadline: January 18)
Fall: semester runs September–December (application deadline: May 3)
Academic year: semester runs September–April (application deadline: May 3)

Please note: We do not accept applications after the deadlines stated above. All applications sent by post must be postmarked before or on the deadlines above.

Program Description

The objective of the internship program is to offer practical museum training experience to individuals interested in pursuing careers in the arts and museum field. Interns gain a general knowledge and broad understanding of how a particular department functions within the context of a major museum as well as specific skills related to a particular department's activities. Interns are assigned to a department based on their academic background, professional skills, interests, and career goals. Interns participate in the ongoing work of the department and complete specific projects or portions of larger departmental initiatives. Please see Departmental Descriptions for more information.

Fall, Spring, and Academic Year internships require a commitment of at least 16 hours a week (in addition to the Museum Culture Seminar Program) and summer internships are full-time, five days per week. All internships require a minimum commitment of three months and a maximum commitment of six months. Please specify the duration which you would like to apply for on your application form (PDF).

Museum Culture Seminar Program

The Museum Culture Seminar Program forms an integral part of our internship program, meeting most Fridays throughout the semesters. The program includes field trips to sites such as auction houses, galleries, corporate collections, artists’ studios, and other museums. Discussion with Guggenheim Museum staff from a range of departments and awareness of a range of museum-related issues is facilitated. A field trip outside New York is planned for every semester. Attendance at all programming is required.

Visas

International students are encouraged to apply. The Guggenheim Museum Internship Program is designated by the U.S. Government as a J-1 training program, and the museum will work with accepted applicants to assist them in procuring the necessary forms for a maximum three-month non-extendable and non-transferable J-1 visa. If you are applying for an internship lasting longer than three months, you are responsible for arranging your own J-1 visa through an independent host company to cover the entire period of your stay. For more information on visas please visit the U.S. Government Web site. All international applicants must demonstrate proficiency in spoken and written English and should provide any documentation or certificates relating to this in their application.

Housing

The Guggenheim Museum does not provide housing. Upon request, the museum can provide accepted applicants with a list of residences, dormitories, and rooms for rent in New York.
