Collection Overview

Lewis Kachur (LK) is an art historian and scholar who spent five years (1982-1987) on staff at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM). In 1978, LK earned his M.A. by completing a thesis on modern art museums with Gerald Silk at Columbia University. LK also earned his M. Phil. in Modern art at Columbia University in 1980. He went on to pursue his Ph.D. at Columbia University's Department of Art History. His dissertation topic focused on "Themes in Picasso's Cubism, 1906-1918" under the supervision of Theodore Reff.

LK worked as an intern at The Jewish Museum's Curatorial Department in 1979. His work there included research on modern art within the collection. He worked as a lecturer in the Museum of Modern Art's Education Department from 1979-1980, preparing weekly talks on temporary exhibitions and permanent collections.

In 1982, LK began employment as a curatorial assistant at the SRGM in New York City. His responsibilities included assisting the Curator of the Permanent Collection with research for a scholarly catalogue of works on paper and sculpture, as well as preparing and researching new acquisition files. He also participated in all aspects of collection sharing, loaning groups of works to selected institutions, and co-organizing the gallery lecturer program. LK left the SRGM in 1987 as adjunct research associate.
