Historical Note

Philip Verre (PV) was born in New York City in 1952. He holds a master's degree in art history from the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and a bachelor's degree in art history from Middlebury College in Vermont. From 1977 to 1982, PV worked at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) as curatorial coordinator (1977-1980) and collections coordinator (1980-1982).

PV worked at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, serving as curator of exhibitions from 1982 to 1984, chief curator from 1984 to 1989, and as deputy director from 1989 to 1990. In 1989, PV attended the Getty Center's Museum Management Institute at Berkeley and in 1990 was appointed director of the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, New York. PV joined the High Museum of Art in October 2000, as deputy director. In 2006, he became the chief operation officer at the High. PV has served as a reviewer for such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Philip Verre (PV) records (1950-1981, bulk 1978-1981) chronicle the work of PV as a curatorial and collections coordinator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM). These records provide an overview of PV's curatorial duties as reflected in research, correspondence, and reports. Additionally included are memoranda, checklists, magazine and newspaper clippings, and photographs. The collection is organized into two series: 1. Administrative and 2. Exhibitions and Objects. Series 1. Administrative includes SRGM information not related to specific exhibitions, such as SRGM artist viewing program correspondence and internal memoranda. Series 2. Exhibitions and Objects contains records pertaining to SRGM exhibitions and its permanent collection, including installation documentation and catalogue creation.

Summary: Series 1. Administrative pertains to general Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) operations within the scope of Philip Verre's (PV) work as a curator. The bulk of the series contains submissions from artists to SRGM through the artist viewing program. The SRGM artist viewing program invites artists to submit images of their artwork to curatorial staff thus allowing potential new talent the opportunity for review. These submissions contain artist correspondence and slides and photographs of artwork.
