Major Acquisition > Thannhauser Collection
Upon his death in 1976, renowned art dealer Justin K. Thannhauser bequeathed some sixty works from his collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and modern French masterpieces to the Guggenheim. Augmented by additional gifts from his widow, Hilde, between 1981 and 1991, this bequest dramatically enriched the museum's holdings, allowing the Guggenheim to tell the story of modern art from its nineteenth-century roots for the first time.
