Cold Tropics (Recife Frio) (Kleber Mendonça Filho, Brazil, 2009, 24 min. In Spanish, Portuguese, and French with English subtitles)
The Magic Gloves (Los guantes mágicos) (Martín Rejtman, Argentina/France, 2003, 90 min. In Spanish with English subtitles)

The fanciful idea of a sudden temperature drop in Recife and Buenos Aires offers an ideal starting point for two cherished South American filmmakers to advance poignant multilayered critiques of globalization and late capitalism. In the mockumentary Cold Tropics, Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds) chronicles the local impact of an unusual weather phenomenon, while in the absurdist comedy The Magic Gloves, Argentinean director Martín Rejtman applies his distinctive deadpan wit to the tale of two dysfunctional middle-class couples struggling to make ends meet.

Screened as part of the film series Tropical Uncanny: Latin American Tropes and Mythologies and presented in conjunction with Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today.

Tropical Uncanny is programmed by Carlos A. Gutiérrez in collaboration with Jerónimo Rodríguez.
