Siesta Talks: Erika Verzutti
Hovering between abstraction and figuration, Erika Verzutti’s (b. 1971, São Paulo) enigmatic sculptures often assume sensuous forms suggestive of animals or vegetation, particularly plants native to tropical regions. She embraces the appearance of accidental breaks, scratches, and stains to achieve familiar yet still disturbing effects. Included in Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today are Painted Lady (2012) and Venus on Fire (2013), totemic bronze structures derived from stacks of common objects. In this exhibition tour, Verzutti reflects on a practice that references sculpture’s history while representing a world between the tangible and the fantastic.
