Neighboring Sounds

Friday, December 27, 2013 @ 3 pm

An existential urban thriller set in one of the ubiquitous gated communities in contemporary Brazil, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s acclaimed debut offers a panoramic view of the fears and class anxieties riddling a country still haunted by its colonial past. The collection of residents in a Recife housing complex, which includes an aging patriarch, his son, and a pot-smoking mother, are all brought together when a series of petty crimes take place, prompting the mysterious arrival of a security firm determined to watch over the neighborhood. Mendonça’s film brilliantly connects the physical barriers of the urban landscape and the divisions eroding the social fabric.
