Eye to Eye: Josh Smith
Josh Smith (b. 1976, Knoxville) creates abstract compositions that span multiple mediums including painting, collage, and ceramics. Drawing from his early training in printmaking, he employs diverse techniques that combine the hand with mechanical reproduction. Known for frenetically repeating his own signature alongside other arbitrary subject matter such as stop signs, leaves, fish, and palm trees, Smith has persistently confronted conventional notions of authorship and the artist’s gesture. Smith is a former studio assistant of Christopher Wool.
In this gallery program, Smith discusses the works on view in Christopher Wool and shares his perspectives on the creative process. A reception with a cash bar follows the tour (Guggenheim Members receive complimentary drinks).
