The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is home to one of the world's finest collections of Modern and contemporary art. Since it was established in 1937 as a foundation for the "promotion and encouragement and education in art and the enlightenment of the public," the Guggenheim Museum has grown from one man's personal vision into a remarkable and varied international institution, preserving Solomon R. Guggenheim's original collection, expanding it to cover the spectrum of art of the 20th century, and offering visual and educational opportunities throughout the world.
The museum's permanent collection of paintings, sculpture, photographs, and works on paper has grown by more than fifteen percent over the last two years. Perhaps the greatest work in the collection, however, is the building itself, which stands today as one of the most important pieces of architecture produced in the 20th century.
