General Information
The Guggenheim's Photography department manages an Image Archive that is available to the public for educational and editorial purposes. Inquiries may be directed to imagearchive@guggenheim.org or fax number 212 586 0785.
The Guggenheim's selection of images is rich in depth and visually impressive. It includes superior photographs of our premiere art collection; installation images of our award-winning exhibitions; and images of our iconic architecture around the world, including original historical photographs of Frank Lloyd Wright and the construction of the Guggenheim Museum, New York.
|
We offer a variety of formats, including 4-x-5 color transparencies; black-and-white photographs; and publication-ready digital files. If photography of a collection work is unavailable, we may be able to arrange for new photography, subject to scheduling and the availability of the artwork. We can also create new architectural views of the Guggenheim Museum upon request, dependent on scheduling and the nature of the project. All requests are subject to applicable third-party legal rights and fees, as outlined below.
Please note that requests to use images for commercial purposes are handled by the Guggenheim's Licensing Program and should be directed to 212 423 3676. Commercial uses include print and television advertisements, editorial shoots, corporate brochures and solicitations, and commercial products.
All revenue generated by the Image Archive is used to support the not-for-profit mission of the Guggenheim. (Read Guggenheim Mission).
|
Scope of Use
Images obtained through the Image Archive are intended for educational and editorial purposes only. Not all images are available for reproduction; some have legal restrictions and others have time limitations. For example, please note that all color transparencies are available for rental for a maximum period of six (6) months.
The Guggenheim's Manager of Photography and Permissions will review each request and will communicate any restrictions to you before releasing the image.
|
Making a Request
All requests must be in writing. Your request must specify the image or type of image you seek, the purpose of your request, the nature of the project, and relevant reproduction and distribution information. For book and other editorial requests, please include print run, publication date, title, author, and number of editions, including foreign-language editions.
In identifying an image, please be as detailed as possible. Specifics are appreciated, including artist name, title of work, date, and medium. Sending a photocopy or an image via e-mail is extremely helpful in identifying which work is needed.
Despite our small staff, the Guggenheim makes every effort to meet requests in a timely manner.
|
Fees
Fees are determined by a number of factors, including the nature of the project, the scope of distribution, and the type of media. For projects in which the Guggenheim agrees to create new photography, there will be additional charges for time and expenses; these will be estimated and agreed to in advance.
We offer reduced fees for not-for-profit organizations, and for the Guggenheim's sponsors and members. All fees support the Guggenheim's not-for-profit mission.
|
Contracts and Payment
The Guggenheim has a standard contract that must be signed prior to final release of an image. All fees must be prepaid. Payment should be made by check or wire transfer and must be made in U.S. dollars.
Credit lines, copyright notices, and trademark notices are specified where relevant.
