Minerva Cuevas’s socially engaged practice encompasses a range of strategies and media including film, installation, performance, and site-specific public intervention. Cuevas aims to provide insight into the complex economic and political structures of the social realm, offering playful possibilities for their subversion. Centered on the image of a banana plant over which a modified version of the Fresh Del Monte Produce logo is superimposed, Cuevas’s installation Del Montte—Bananeras (2003) narrates a history of tension between major transnational banana companies and various Latin American countries, Guatemala in particular.
