Taking the concept of translation as a model and a metaphor, this exhibition brings together recent works that investigate the ways cultural difference is negotiated through written or spoken text. Through videos, installations, photography, and other media, the artists in this exhibition explore intersections of language, politics, history, and fantasy, critically commenting on the past while producing richly imagined possibilities for the present.
Berlin Commissions

Deutsche Guggenheim Commissions represent a continuation of the Guggenheim Foundation's existing commitment to the fostering of contemporary art and architecture. The seventeen artists who have participated in the series to date—Paweł Althamer, John Baldessari, Hanne Darboven, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, Jeff Koons, Julie Mehretu, Gerhard Richter, James Rosenquist, Andreas Slominski, Agathe Snow, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Bill Viola, Jeff Wall, Phoebe Washburn, Lawrence Weiner, and Rachel Whiteread—comprise various nationalities, genders, and generations, and work in a diversity of media.

Just as unique as the collaboration between the Deutsche Bank and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is the concept of the Edition Deutsche Guggenheim. For each exhibition, curators and artists develop a special edition that is intended to be both a usable article and a work of art. The edition goes forth from the museum in order to be worn, utilized, or collected. Many renowned artists, including James Rosenquist, Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter, Jeff Wall, Anish Kapoor, Agathe Snow, and recently Paweł Althamer, have contributed to this innovative series.
