Solomon R. Guggenheim (1861–1949) was born into a large, affluent family of Swiss origin, which amassed its fortune in American mining during the 19th century. Guggenheim and his wife Irene Rothchild became enthusiastic patrons of the arts, accumulating a collection of works by Old Masters. [more]
